Clinical Research Trials
What Are Clinical Research Trials?
Clinical research trials are carefully controlled research studies in which people volunteer to test the safety and effectiveness of new drugs, medical products or techniques. Each study gathers scientific evidence to find better ways to prevent, diagnose or treat medical conditions. In the U.S., all drugs undergo rigorous clinical trials before being approved for use by the general public.
Research trials are an integral part of medicines and devices getting approved for use. In addition, many people enrolled in clinical trials have been helped as a result of having access to leading-edge care they otherwise would not have had. Quite often the first people to have been helped by a medication or medical device are people who were part of its clinical research trial.
Clinical Research Trials at Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine / Pain Management
At Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine / Pain Management, we actively participate in clinical trials related to orthopedics, sports medicine and pain management. All trials provide study medication, medical exams and labs, and study participants may be eligible for time/travel reimbursement. For more information, please call (941) 782-1353.
If you are interested in enrolling in a clinical trial, sign up now. You can fill out the Research Trials Participation Request Form, located under Our Services, and one of our staff will contact you to let you know if you meet the qualifications for participating in one of our studies.
Current Clinical Trials
Coastal Research is currently involved in 2 unique research trials, which are both currently recruiting patients:
- St. Jude Medical Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) Trial
- Objective: To demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of the EON MINI IPG in combination with percutaneous leads in the management of chronic intractable pain of the trunk and/or limbs
- Target Population: Patients 18 years or older
- Exclusions: Chronic pain due to malignant disease; less than 1 year life expectancy; no pace-makers; no emotional or psychological conditions; patients who have another spinal cord stimulator or infusion pump
- Neurotherm - Radiofrequency Nerve Ablation Trial
- Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy (safety) of radiofrequency lesioning of sensory innervations of the sacroiliac region as a treatment for pain associated with SI joint dysfunction, as well as to evaluate the economic and cost benefits of radiofrequency as a treatment for pain associated with SI joint dysfunction
- Target Population: Patients 18 years or older with Sacroiliac joint dysfunction and who have not had positive responses to other treatments
- Exclusions: Body Mass Index greater than 35.0
- Important Notes: Must be evaluated by a Coastal Pain Management physician
